San Francisco Personal Injury Attorney Discusses Janssen Settlement

San Francisco Injury Attorney Reports On Risperdal SettlementAs reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Johnson & Johnson?s pharmaceutical subsidiary, Janssen, the maker and distributor of Risperdal, has entered into a $181 million dollar settlement with 36 states and the District of Columbia who brought consumer fraud lawsuits against the company for its marketing practices of the drug.

Risperdal is a drug used to treat bipolar mania and schizophrenia. The states and federal government had alleged that the company promoted Risperdal for off label uses including dementia, depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder in children and adolescents.

The lawsuits also alleged that the company had promoted the drug with unsound scientific studies and paid doctors for prescribing the drug while at the same time downplaying or ignoring the drug?s serious side effects.

This settlement follows two others in state court involving Risperdal. An Arkansas judge ordered the company to pay $1.2 billion in fines for similar allegations and the company was ordered to pay $327 million in fines in South Carolina.
