Romo_Responds

We routinely receive P.R. notices aimed at persuading us to make a news item out of an advertising effort.? Usually, we invite them to contact the sales department.

Every once in a while, however, an ad masquerading as a news story becomes slightly newsworthy.

Consider the latest Starter commercial, featuring images of a non-smiling Tony Romo going through a Rocky Balboa-style gauntlet of workouts.? (The only thing missing is the periodic cry of ?Eli!?)? Off camera, Romo narrates.

?People focus on what we haven?t accomplished,? Romo says.? ?They focus on mistakes.? The near misses.? The heart breaks.? People say we haven?t succeeded.? People say we haven?t won a championship.? People critique our lives.? People say we get too much praise.? People are focused on what we haven?t done.? That?s what I?m focused on, too.?

He comes off as mildly indignant while reciting the lines, but then in the end he basically agrees with the critics.? And he doesn?t suggest that he?s using the criticism as Tebow-style ??preciate that? motivation.

It?s almost like it?s a coincidence.

It?s unclear how much if at all an ad like this provides a window into a guy?s soul.? Presumably, he wouldn?t have done it if he doesn?t believe it.? Or maybe he just didn?t sufficiently disagree with the approach to say so.

Either way, the guy in the commercial comes off very differently than the guy we?ve seen on the field for the last six years.? The guy in the commercial has zero tolerance for losing.? The guy in the commercial doesn?t seem to be content with simply going from being an undrafted player to the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys.? The guy in the commercials wants a hell of a lot more than Romo has achieved.

Maybe it?s the new Romo.? We?ll begin the process of finding out on Wednesday night.

Argentine president wants to take on Hollywood

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) ? Argentina's leader unveiled an ambitious plan Wednesday to support the country's television and film creators with a new industrial park along the Buenos Aires waterfront that she hopes will be modeled on Hollywood's studios.

President Cristina Fernandez decreed the creation of a public-private company leveraging state pension funds to attract private developers and turn an abandoned industrial area near the city's glitzy Puerto Madero district into a business incubator known as the "Polo Audiovisual," or audiovisual center.

"Just like they do it in Hollywood, where support for the industry has made it possible for its content to become almost universal, we want our values and culture in Argentina to have this kind of development," she said.

Argentina's "El Secreto de Sus Ojos" won the best foreign film Oscar in 2010, but the vast majority of movies Argentines see are still made in America.

Fernandez has sought to change that by requiring at least a minimum amount of televised content to be homegrown, and by subsidizing a content boom on state-run television that has fostered thousands of jobs.

A new media law requires cable companies to include a movie channel run by the National Institute of Cinematic and Audiovisual Art, as well as Paka Paka, an advertising-free channel similar to the Children's Television Workshop, which brought Sesame Street to U.S. viewers.

For Argentines who grew up watching dubbed and subtitled American shows, the chance to see people on TV who talk like themselves in familiar settings has been revelatory. But cable providers and movie multiplexes still focus on top-rated shows and films backed by major U.S. distributors, making it difficult for Argentine content to find audiences.

The audiovisual incubator is to be located in a gritty zone of abandoned factories where Puerto Madero meets the Riachuelo river. Empty grain silos, chemical plants and shipbuilding equipment stand there as testaments to industries that went bust long ago.

"It's just a few meters from Puerto Madero and it's now just dead space that lacks any activity," said Fernandez. She invited real estate developers to make proposals not only for movie studios but also for other businesses and riverfront areas that would be open to the public.

Fernandez' main political rival, Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri has similarly ambitious plans for a neighboring waterfront property once known as "Sports City," where his government plans a $1 billion development of shopping centers, restaurants, office space and upscale housing for 15,000 people.

In between the two planned developments, thousands of people live in grim poverty on the riverbanks, in shacks that get swamped whenever the river water kicks up.

(AP) ? Wynonna Judd is going back on tour after her husband lost his left leg in a motorcycle crash.

She says in a statement that husband Michael Scott "Cactus" Moser "continues to improve every day as he begins his road to rehabilitation."

Moser was also her drummer. Judd says they are looking forward to the day when they will be together again on stage.

Moser was injured Aug. 18 in South Dakota. He was airlifted to a hospital, and doctors amputated his leg.

Instead of gifts, the couple is asking people to donate in Moser's name to Homes For Our Troops. The organization helps members of the military with serious disabilities.

Judd's tour resumes Thursday in Michigan. She has also rescheduled shows that she missed because of the accident.

Liberty Ross Receiving, Enjoying Career Boost from Cheating Scandal

No wonder Liberty Ross may take Rupert Sanders back. She has her adulterous husband to thank for a major career revival!

While Ross may be suffering personally as a result of Sanders smooching Kristen Stewart, sources tell Radar Online that the affair "improved her profile as an actress."

Ross, a model by trade, has taken bit parts in last year's W.E. and this summer's Snow White and the Huntsman, but "the scripts have been flooding in and she has already received audition offers on the back of Rupert’s affair," this insider adds.

Liberty Ross Close Up

Might as well turn lemons into big screen lemonade, right?

It remains unclear if Ross and Sanders will reconcile - she's been spotted without her wedding ring on, yet he was donning his this week during a walk with the couple's kids - but Liberty's future as an actress doesn't appear to be in doubt.

"Liberty is delighted that she’s being finally recognized, she wants to pursue a career in the movies and is desperate to make more," claims the mole. "She would of preferred if it had happened in a different way, but press is press.

"If she could swap her modeling career for a successful acting one, Liberty would do it in a heartbeat."

Information On How To Locate The Most Superb Online Car Insurance

An individual need be astounded to learn that she may receive online car insurance quotes. This article will help anyone interested in auto coverage quotes learn how to find the company with the best quotes. Below is some useful information for finding the most excellent internet auto coverage quotes.

There exist plenty of internet sites which give individuals quotes for vehicle coverage. A person can easily get in touch with them to offer her a quote for automobile coverage by signing up on their site. Nevertheless, an individual need not get carried away by the inexpensive vehicle coverage quote.

Though the quotes are somewhat low, the actual cost will actually depend on the condition of one?s vehicle, the mileage traveled, and its make and model. All these aspects determine the current worth of a person?s automobile for assessing the coverage quote. To receive an online quote, an individual will be required to provide all the details of his vehicle in a prescribed form to get a proper quote.

Plenty of insurers additionally provide calculators on their websites, which provide individuals the quotes after filling in the essential details of their automobile. In majority of cases, these quotes might actually not be accurate, as the website has not made sure their calculator is current. This might lead to an incorrect and false quote in such a case.

The most popular automobile coverage businesses additionally have their agents who can call a person to receive all the details about her automobile. An individual may talk with the agent to obtain a quote and discover all the pertinent details including their reimbursement policy. A person should not just sign up for a business based on their quotes, it is much more prudent to negotiate for bonuses and discounts and appraise the general cost with other bargains.

Another option to get quotes using the internet is contacting internet auto coverage companies on their toll-free 1-800 numbers. These businesses work using the internet, though it is better for one to know their reimbursement policy. A person ought to be careful about fraudulent operators who might trick him and swindle his money.

Nevertheless, there are reputable and reliable firms that offer vehicle coverage quotes. It is important to only use these reputable companies when searching for vehicle coverage quotes. Only after a person has contacted suitable firms and has received good feedback, can he ask for more details from these companies.

It is very critical to find online car insurance quotes offered by several businesses as opposed to getting just a single quote. This will help a person benefit from the best offers and as well choose a trustworthy firm. Moreover, an individual needs to evaluate the policies and deals to make the most excellent deal to meet her needs.

You can find a detailed summary of the benefits of getting online car insurance quotes and more information about a reputable online quote provider, right now.

Stocks edge up after US growth revised higher

(AP) ? Slightly better economic growth and stronger housing sales nudged the stock market higher Wednesday.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up six points to 13,110 shortly after noon EDT.

Major indexes opened slightly higher after the government said the economy grew at a quicker pace in the spring than first thought.

The U.S. economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate from April through June thanks to rising consumer spending and exports. That's an improvement from the initial estimate of 1.5 percent, but not enough to put a dent in the unemployment rate.

The National Association of Realtors said its index of sales for previously owned homes increased 2.4 percent in July, reaching its highest level since April 2010, the last month buyers could qualify for a federal tax credit.

"It's a mixed message overall," said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade. "We all know we need 2 percent (economic) growth. And you can't continue to improve on housing if the unemployment picture doesn't improve. At some point, the numbers have to match."

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 index added one point to 1,410, while the Nasdaq composite index inched up three points to 3,080.

Crude oil dipped 1.5 percent to $94.87. Hurricane Isaac made landfall Tuesday night, but its heavy winds and rain aren't expected to cause extensive damage to oil production and refinery operations in the Gulf of Mexico.

Markets have slipped into a late-summer lull. Indexes have barely budged amid some of thinnest trading days this year. For the week, the S&P 500 index is down one point.

Just 7.7 billion shares were traded on the New York Stock Exchange over the previous three days, the slowest three-day stretch since December 2011, according to FactSet data. One measure of stock-market volatility, the Vix, recently sank to a five-year low.

Kinahan said the market's apparent lack of direction makes sense, especially ahead of the Labor Day weekend and a highly anticipated speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke on Friday.

"There's no incentive to take a big trading position," he said. "Many people I know plan on taking a three-day weekend or are just coming in for the speech to see if (Bernanke) says anything interesting or market-moving. If not, they're outta there."

A handful of companies reported earnings Wednesday. H.J. Heinz posted a 14 percent jump in quarterly net income, driven by higher prices and emerging-market sales. The clothing-store chain Jos A. Bank posted stronger sales and revenue than Wall Street expected, and its stock soared $7.10 to $48.73.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Joy Global sank 1 percent. The supplier of coal mining equipment reported results early Wednesday that missed analysts' estimates and also cut its full-year earnings outlook as demand for coal in the U.S. and China slows. The company's stock lost 35 cents to $52.75.

? Sealed Air Corp. jumped 8 percent, the S&P 500's biggest gain, after the food packaging company said a former Dow Chemical executive would take over when its current CEO retires. The former Dow executive has experience with mergers, and Sealed Air bought a cleaning and sanitation company last year. The company's stock gained $1 to an even $14.

MCM DESIGN: Co-housing Manor Plan

Ground Floor Plan

Second Floor Plan

Co-housing Manor is a design exercise looking at a different form of housing for today's Baby Boomer generation that wants to downsize and simplify from the large homes they raised their families in. ?In many ways they still need the large homes after their kids have grown and moved away. ?They need the number of bedrooms for when the next generation comes to visit. ?They need the large kitchen and entertaining areas for family celebrations and holidays. The three car garage also has become a large project or hobby space that is difficult to give up when downsizing. And often an adult kid may need to come back to live at home when economic hardship or divorce happens.

Family members often like to be in closer proximity to each other. ?Like in the case of an elderly relative that needs to watched over, or the need to take care of a house while someone is traveling for extended periods. ?The expense of gas and frustration of traffic at certain times of the day can limit the ability of family members to travel across town or between cities to be supportive of each other.

Families today also are comprised of close friends that they feel the same level of care for as actual relations and are an integral part of their lives.

Co-Housing Manor is a way for a close group of people to live together in a supportive way and still maintain a level of privacy and autonomy.

It is five independent living units that share larger common amenities that are difficult to give up when moving to smaller homes, as well as allow the supportive family environment that close proximity allows. ?There are five living units ranging from 638 to 1729 square feet. ?The total building area is 8900 square feet giving an average of 1,800 sf per unit. ?So it allows you to downsize to about 1,500 sf yet retain the large public areas that would be common in a house of 8 to 10 thousand square feet.

There is a 19' by 32' Great Hall that can be used for large entertaining such as holidays or family celebrations like birthdays or weddings. ?It can also be available to invite the wider neighborhood in for community interaction. ?There is a likewise large outdoor covered gathering space for more casual or impromptu socializing. Supporting both spaces is a large central kitchen which can have larger capacity appliances for use of residents and offers more space than in their private units for projects that need larger layout counters.

There is a guest suite attached to the common area to accommodate visitors that allows both they and you privacy that is difficult when you have downsized to a condominium. ?

There is a separate garage that can be set up for a shop or be used for extra storage of sports equipment or hobbies that would not fit within the single garage provided each unit.

There are five two story townhouses at each corner separated by garages so they are very private and there is no chance of noise transmission through common walls. ?The rooms are on the small side, but there are large master baths and walk in closets normally found in larger homes. ?There is a second space that can be used for home office, guest room or media center. ?A studio apartment on the second floor can be rented out or used for an adult child that has moved back, or for a person that can act as a caretaker for the complex.

Samsung's 'Internal Memo' On The Patent Lawsuit - Business Insider

samsung galaxy s iii front pageSamsung has posted an "internal memo" on the outcome of its big patent lawsuit on the company's blog.

We're not sure how internal the memo really is, since it was posted on its blog, but whatever.

Here's what Samsung is telling its people:

We initially proposed to negotiate with Apple instead of going to court, as they had been one of our most important customers. However, Apple pressed on with a lawsuit, and we have had little choice but to counter-sue, so that we can protect our company.

Certainly, we are very disappointed by the verdict at the US District Court for the Northern District of California (NDCA), and it is regrettable that the verdict has caused concern amongst our employees, as well as our loyal customers.

However, the judge?s final ruling remains, along with a number of other procedures. We will continue to do our utmost until our arguments have been accepted.

The NDCA verdict starkly contrasts decisions made by courts in a number of other countries, such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Germany, and Korea, which have previously ruled that we did not copy Apple?s designs. These courts also recognized our arguments concerning our standards patents.

History has shown there has yet to be a company that has won the hearts and minds of consumers and achieved continuous growth, when its primary means to competition has been the outright abuse of patent law, not the pursuit of innovation.

We trust that the consumers and the market will side with those who prioritize innovation over litigation, and we will prove this beyond doubt.

CONVENTION WATCH: Romney on his way, polls tight

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Around the 2012 Republican National Convention and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details to you:

___

TAMPA-BOUND

Mitt Romney will be on the way to Florida on Tuesday ? the day his wife's scheduled to give her speech at the Republican National Convention.

The presumptive GOP nominee for president will arrive in Tampa on what's effectively the first day of the convention. Although it was called to order Monday, it was immediately adjourned until Tuesday because of Tropical Storm Isaac.

? Thomas Beaumont ? Twitter http://twitter.com/tombeaumont

___

POLLS: A TIGHTER RACE

Pre-convention polling has wrapped, and neither candidate for president begins the race to Nov. 6 with a head start.

President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney begin the campaign's high season about even. Modest advantages for Obama had begun to look like the norm, but four new surveys in the last week along with Gallup's daily tracking poll found a tighter race with no discernible edge for either candidate.

An Associated Press-GfK poll puts the contest at 47 percent Obama to 46 percent for Romney among registered voters. Fox News, NBC/Wall Street Journal, Washington Post-ABC News and the Gallup tracker all report similar findings among that group.

Other common themes across this wave of polling include Obama maintaining his advantage as the more likable or empathetic candidate, while Romney continues to have his strongest performance against the president on handling the economy.

One viewpoint, from Tampa's police chief, Jane Castor: Protesters around the GOP convention can say and do whatever they wish "as long as they don't cross the line into criminal behavior."

And another, from Cara Jennings, a voter outreach organizer from Palm Beach County, Fla.: "They've militarized Tampa."

So far, protests have been muted and only two people have been arrested. That's in stark contrast to four years ago, when hundreds of protesters were arrested at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn. In Tampa, protesters, who for months planned to converge on Tampa to showcase their gripes and messages, have been peaceful and small in number.

STAR-SPANGLED ENCORE

He performed on the "Today" show, sang the funeral Mass for Tim Russert and belted out the national anthem for the Republicans during their last convention in 2008. On Tuesday, New Jersey-born tenor Philip Alongi Jr. is back in the political spotlight when he again sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" for the Republicans.

The young Alongi has performed more than a dozen operatic roles across the United States, including productions of Carmen, Madama Butterfly and La Traviata. Since his last convention appearance, Alongi has released the debut albums "Heritage," a collection of songs and arias of Italy, and "New Life: Songs of Faith," a collection of sacred works spanning eras from the 17th century to today.

NEW JUST TRY GETTING HOME

Many Republican National Convention attendees put up with delayed, diverted or canceled flights on their way to Tampa, some blamed on Tropical Storm Isaac. They can expect a bumpy ride home, too.

Airlines are already warning about the crush of passengers heading out of town at week's end. Delta Air Lines is advising travelers to arrive at Tampa International Airport at least two hours early to deal with security, crowds and assorted delays "outside of our control."

TRUMP'S TEASE

For weeks, showman Donald Trump has been doing the slow tease about his plans for the GOP convention.

He was asked to speak, he says, but decided to do something "bigger." Something "very, very major." Something "hopefully quite amazing."

Trump was in Sarasota, Fla., over the weekend to accept an award, but headed back to New York when Monday's convention activities were pared down due to Tropical Storm Isaac.

Does that mean no more surprise?

"The big surprise is still going to happen, so stay tuned," promises Trump spokesman Michael Cohen.

GOP officials are playing along. Says convention planner Russ Schriefer: "Just because he isn't here, doesn't mean he's not going to show up."

THE PRESIDENT'S PEN

His rivals may be convening in Florida this week. But at the White House, President Barack Obama is getting ready for his big moment next week ? at the Democratic National Convention.

DOG FIGHT

At least one Tampa, Fla., rally's gone to the dogs already.

Amid a protest objecting to the way Mitt Romney transported the family pet on a years-ago vacation ? inside an animal carrier strapped atop the car ? a woman stepped into the crowd and began loudly defending the GOP candidate.

"What Mitt Romney did to his dog, his dog liked and it was safe and enjoyable," said Barbara Seidenberg. As several canine-toting protesters tried to shout her down, she pressed on.

"Barack Obama was a 10-year-old boy when he ate dog," she said, apparently referring to a passage in one of Obama's books in which he writes about eating dog meat as a boy in Indonesia. "But he was a grown man when he decided his whole persona and his life was going to be committed to turning this country into less of a country so that ? "

She was drowned out by a protester yelling "Obama 2012!"

A shouting match ensued, and Seidenberg stormed off.

CAIN WEIGHS IN

At one point, he was a serious challenger for the GOP nomination. But Herman Cain says he's not upset about being excluded from the list of speakers at the Republican National Convention this week.

Cain's 9-9-9 tax plan helped him carve out a unique niche in the primary, with some polls showing him moving toward taking the lead in the fall. But allegations of sexual harassment derailed his candidacy.

Cain is making the rounds in Tampa. He tells CNN that he has met one-on-one with presumptive nominee Mitt Romney on at least three occasions in recent months. He says he's not upset about his lack of a speaking slot because other black Republican speakers needed the exposure more than he did.

Cain says the allegations that derailed his candidacy were part of a coordinated attack, but he didn't say whether the effort was undertaken by a particular Republican or a Democratic campaign: "I don't want to say anything that might jeopardize what we might do in the future in terms of exposing what happened."

ISAAC'S UGLY, BUT NO KATRINA

Isaac is sweeping up the Gulf Coast just in time for the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated New Orleans.

A tropical storm expected to strengthen into a hurricane, Isaac could prove punishing. But it's nowhere near as powerful as the bruiser that struck on Aug. 29, 2005.

At one point, Katrina reached Category 5 status with winds over 157 mph. It made landfall as a Category 3 with a huge storm surge. Levee failures caused catastrophic flooding.

This time, Federal Emergency Management Agency officials say the updated levees around New Orleans are equipped to handle storms stronger than Isaac. City officials had no plans to order evacuations, instead telling residents to hunker down and make do with the supplies they have.

"It's going to be all right," said New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

Isaac promises a soaking but not much more for Tampa, Fla., where the Republican National Convention was pushed back a day just in case.

SAY IT IN SONG

Why say it when you can sing it?

Most speeches at this week's Republican National Convention are set to a particular theme for the day. "We Built It," is Tuesday's mantra, a poke at Obama's "You didn't build that" line at a July campaign event.

A convention entertainer will sing about it. Guitarist Lane Turner rehearsed his tune "I Built It" in a sparsely filled convention hall Monday.

"I built it with my own two working hands," goes the chorus. "Yeah I built it. No help from Uncle Sam."

Obama's campaign argues that his words, meant to stress the value of government in fostering infrastructure, were taken out of context.

VOIGHT ON OBAMA

The Virginia delegation served up some celebrity with its political breakfast Monday.

Jon Voight, the Academy Award-winning actor better known to today's moviegoers as the father of Angelina Jolie, joined Tagg Romney, son of the presidential candidate, to talk government spending, media coverage and President Barack Obama's record at the delegation's morning session.

Delegate Erin Smith of Leesburg, Va., says Voight complained that the media wasn't providing balanced coverage of the two candidates. She says Voight also argued that on several issues Obama campaigned on, he acted differently in office.

TEMPEST IN A TOTE BAG?

Maybe Mitt Romney assumes GOP delegates won't read all the way to page 177 of his book, "No Apology," included in their gift bags.

If they do, they'll find an uncomfortable sentence for Romney ? a sentence dropped from the paperback edition. It alludes to his push, as Massachusetts governor, to require all residents to obtain insurance as part of health care reforms.

"We can accomplish the same thing for everyone in the country, and it can be done without letting government take over health care," Romney wrote. That sounds a lot like the health care mandate in "Obamacare," which Romney now vows to undo.

In the paperback edition, the passage refers only to preventing a government takeover of health care. Publications including the Washington Examiner took note of the hardback's presence at the convention.

Of course, hardbacks make nicer gifts. And the swag bags don't include much else ? mints and sunglasses, mainly.

HURRICANE GOP?

Dorothy Crockett says she wasn't about to let Isaac, the tropical storm gaining hurricane strength, keep her from a minute of the Republican National Convention.

The Arkansas spitfire ? decked out in red, white and blue from her jacket to her earrings ? was among a couple hundred delegates who showed up for the abbreviated opening Monday despite the cancellation of the speaking schedule.

"At my age I have never experienced a hurricane," the 77-year-old from northeast Arkansas says. "The only hurricane I want to experience is the Republicans taking over the House, the Senate and the White House. This is the Republican hurricane."

CHOICE SEATING

Mitt Romney's adopted state of Massachusetts is rewarded at the Republican National Convention with prime seating ? just feet from where he'll accept the nomination this week. It's a rare honor for Massachusetts, a Democratic bastion used to being relegated to the back of the hall.

Kerry Healy, who served as lieutenant governor under Romney, is at the front of the front next to others who helped his rise. It reflects, Healy says, "a new thing for Massachusetts to have a Republican nominee for president. We have had plenty of the other kind."

Also in choice seats: delegates from battleground states of Virginia and Ohio as well as Romney's birth state of Michigan and vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's home state of Wisconsin.

AT&T staff also now rumored to have been given holiday blackout dates from September 21, the rumored iPhone 5 launch day

AT&T and Verizon staff rumored to have been given holiday blackout dates from September 21, iPhone 5 launch day?iMore previously reported that Apple would be introducing the iPhone 5 at an event on Wednesday, September 12, and releasing it on Friday, September 21. Now, TechCrunch's Jordan Cook reports that AT&T staff has been given a vacation blackout from September 21 to September 30, which exactly matches the Verizon blackouts reported previously.

We?ve received yet another bit of evidence confirming the next iPhone?s September 21 launch. According to an AT&T sales rep, AT&T staff have been given a vacation blackout from September 21 to September 30, just like Verizon employees. Our source also mentioned that blue carrier employees are undergoing training for an ?iconic release.?

This information essentially seals the deal save for an official word from Apple. So along with International Peace Day, World Gratitude Day, and Mini Golf Day, mark down September 21 in your calendar. It?ll be a big day.

As of yet, Apple hasn?t issued any invitations so it is still unconfirmed. There is nothing unusual about this as, last year, Apple issued invitations for its iPhone 4S event just seven days before the announcement. If Apple sticks to the same format, expect to hear official news of the event around the September 5; Apple doesn?t believe in giving the press too much notice for events like this.

Update: Not so, says 9to5Mac's Seth Weintraub. Or at least, not certain, not widespread, and maybe not at all.

Annapolitans Bike Eight States in Eight Days For MS - Annapolis Patch

Three Annapolis residents plan to bike their way through eight states in eight days to raise money and awareness about?Multiple Sclerosis (MS) this October.

For Glenn Drake, of Annapolis, the 550-mile ride is personal. His mother-in-law suffers from the disease.?

He's taking the?MS Great 8?8 State Tour, which was started three years ago by the MS Great 8 Foundation, in her honor along with 20 other people from eight different states.?This year's route runs from Maine to New York City and takes place from Oct. 7 to 14.

Jan Sullivan, also of Annapolis, is riding for more than her love of biking.

"My father is one reason I ride," Sullivan said. "He passed away from complications from?MS?in 1992."

Dave Bethel, a Severn resident and U.S. Naval Academy grad, does the ride every year. He said every person on this ride has been touched in some way by the disease.

He also takes credit for recruiting several members of the team. Drake joked that he's riding because Bethel made him.

MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves, according to the National?Multiple Sclerosis Society. Symptoms can be as mild as numbness in the limbs or as severe as paralysis.?

The disease also hits home for MS Great 8 Foundation?co-president Mike Zimits who lives with the disease.

"The ride is to inspire people living with MS like myself to not let the disease stop them from living their passions and dreams," Zimits said. "We don't have a cure, but we can get up every day and 'finish the race.' We can go out and do what we want to do. We can keep it from beating us and owning us."

The other purpose of the ride is to "let people know that MS is alive and kicking, so to speak."

Zimits said people often don't realize that more than one person an hour being diagnosed in the U.S.

The goal this year is to raise at least $200,000 for?various chapters of the National MS Society. The rider's local chapter of the national foundation will receive the donations that he or she raised.

In 2011, a team of 16 riders raised $167,000 and in 2010?the ride's first year?a team of 10 people raised $116,000.

"Every dollar raised goes to them," Zimits said. "There's no 30 percent going to pay somebody's salary."

Zimits has been impressed with the Maryland contingent of his bike riding pack.?Last year the Maryland part of the team raised approximately $44,000 for the ride.

"They're great folks," Zimits said. "They're awesome. Dave [Bethel], he's a larger than life guy, and I love him. The guy's heart is as big as he is ...?Jane is like our hood ornament; she's so tiny. She's also very dedicated view towards MS with the history of MS with her father. I think she's a great rider."

Zimits said the commradery among the riders has been one of the big positives to come out of the annual event.

"Those folks?as different as they all look?are such similar souls," Zimits said. "We laugh together, and we cry together, and we help each other up the hills together and we have a good time."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When man first harnessed fire, no one recorded it. When the Wright Brothers showed man could fly, only a handful of people witnessed it. But when Neil Armstrong took that first small step on the moon in July 1969, an entire globe watched in grainy black-and-white from a quarter million miles away

We saw it. We were part of it. He took that "giant leap for mankind" for us.

Although more than half of the world's population wasn't alive then, it was an event that changed and expanded the globe.

"It's a human achievement that will be remembered forever," said John Logsdon, professor emeritus of space policy at George Washington University. Those first steps were beamed to nearly every country around the world, thanks to a recently launched satellite. It was truly the first global mass media event, Logsdon said. An estimated 600 million people ? 1 out of every 5 on the planet ? watched.

The two historical events likely to be long remembered from the 20th Century are the moon landing and the first atomic bomb, said Smithsonian Institution space curator Roger Launius.

"There is no way to overestimate that significance in human history and he is forever linked to that," Launius said of Armstrong, who died Saturday at age 82.

??????????????? Just as the voyage of Christopher Columbus split historic eras 500 years ago, so will Neil Armstrong and Apollo 11, said Rice University historian Douglas Brinkley, a specialist in 20th Century history.

??????????????? "We may be living in the age of Armstrong," said Brinkley, who conducted oral histories for NASA, including sessions with Armstrong.

The late science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke wrote that the Apollo 11 moon landing was "one of the great divides in human history; we are sundered from it forever by the moment when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin stepped out on to the Sea of Tranquility. Now history and fiction have become inexorably intertwined."

Since that day, there's been a common phrase: "If we can send a man to the moon, why can't we ... ?" with the blank filled with a task that seems far less difficult.

Armstrong's small step was that leap in confidence telling the world "if we can do this, we can do anything," said Howard McCurdy, a professor of space and public policy at American University and author of the book "Space and the American Imagination."

"He took something that 20 years earlier was pure fantasy and turned it into reality and if we could do that for space we could do it for anything," McCurdy said Saturday.

The Apollo 11 moon landing was the finish line in a decade-long space race started by the Soviet Union. And so the first steps on the moon coming from an American civilian had many meanings. Getting there first showed American technological superiority, but Armstrong mentioned mankind ? not Americans ? demonstrating that this was a moment for the people of Earth, McCurdy said.

Armstrong and Aldrin left a plaque on the moon that read:? "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon. July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind."

For all mankind. And that's how the world took it.

"The success for America (is a) success for every living man" reported the Swahili-language newspaper Nguromo of Dar.

And if that wasn't enough, Armstrong and Aldrin also left a patch to commemorate NASA astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts who had died in pursuit of space.

"It was special and memorable but it was only instantaneous because there was work to do," Armstrong told an Australian television interviewer this year.

The Cold War may have slightly muted the significance of the event at the time, but over the years the importance of the moon landing has only grown, Logsdon said.

It's permeated into culture. The moon landing is in movies, television, books, songs and it was even Michael Jackson's signature dance step. That's probably because in some ways that moonwalk touched something that has been hard-wired into humanity: the need to explore. For 25,000 years, humans have been migrating and pushing into new places. Armstrong took it to new heights.

John Glenn, the first American to orbit the Earth, noted it was "the first time any human being set foot on a place other than Earth, and that's a pretty big step."

Sony Mobile shrinks Swedish operations, sacking 1000

Allan Swann Published 23 August 2012

Sony Mobile is moving is the majority of its mobile phone operations back to Japan, cutting its workforce by 15%.

The Sony Mobile move is the latest step of its Sony-Ericsson takeover, and will see the company cutting its staff by 1000 in its Lund, Sweden offices. 650 of these will be full time employees in Lund, the rest are external consultants.

These jobs will be cut gradually across 2012 and 2013, to be completed by March 2014. Lund will continue to be used for software and application development.

Sony Mobile CEO Kunimasa Suzuki says the move to bring its operations back to Japan will enhance market efficiency, streamline supply chain management and drive greater integration with the wider Sony group.

"We are accelerating the integration and convergence with the wider Sony group to continue enhancing our offerings, and a more focused and efficient operational structure will help to reduce Sony Mobile's costs, enhance time to market efficiency and bring the business back to a place of strength," he said.

Sony Corporation CEO Kaz Hirai has been working hard to rebuild Sony, which has become a lumbering giant and struggles across the board. His plan is to horizontally and vertically integrate the business, through a fusion of software and hardware - experience gained during his time leading the Playstation division. To this end, Hirai announced in April that 10,000 jobs would be axed from various facets of the business.

Sony bought out its joint venture partner Ericsson's 50% stake in Sony-Ericsson late last year, renaming it Sony Mobile. The acquisition was completed in February 2012.

England-South Africa one-dayer starts after rain

Rain reduced the first of five one-day internationals between England and South Africa to a 23 overs per side contest at Cardiff on Friday.

After South Africa one-day captain AB de Villiers won the toss and fielded, rain prevented what should have been a 50 overs per side match from starting as scheduled at 10.15am local time (0915GMT) and several hours were lost before the first ball was bowled at 3pm (1400GMT).

But no sooner had Morne Morkel started the innings with a wide, then the umpires took the players off the field only to re-emerge minutes later to a chorus of boos from understandably frustrated spectators.

If South Africa, who on Monday replaced England at the top of the world Test rankings with a 51-run victory at Lord's, win this series or achieve a 2-2 draw they will also take over from England at the head of the one-day standings too.

Do you like surprises (the good kind, of course!)? If you do, then you?re going to love this Peach-Rosemary Crisp! This recipe takes one of my summertime favorites, a classic peach crisp, and lightens it up a little by cutting down on the butter and sugar, swapping in some agave syrup, and using whole wheat instead of white flour. And, as for the surprise (and the highlight of the dessert) ? fresh rosemary to add a touch of savory to this sweet treat.

Recipe: Peach-Rosemary Crisp

peach rosemary crisp

Serves 6

?What You?ll Need:

Filling
8 medium-large ripe peaches, peeled and cut into chunks
3 tablespoons fresh rosemary, finely chopped
1/2 cup agave syrup
1/2 cup whole wheat flour

Crisp Topping
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup whole oats
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

What to Do:?

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. ?In a large bowl, toss the filling ingredients until well combined. Set aside.
  3. ?In a separate bowl, combine the dry?ingredients?for the topping (flour, oats, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon), and mix together.
  4. Add butter to the dry ingredients. Using your hands, mix together until the mixture becomes crumbly but well combined. (You don?t want huge chunks of butter!)
  5. Divide the peach mixture between six individual ramekins, and top each serving with the topping mixture. (This can also be done in one baking pan.)
  6. Place ramekins on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until top is lightly browned and filling is bubbling. Enjoy!

This whisky-based cocktail incorporates the tartness of lemonade and sweetness of herb-infused honey simple syrup.?It?s the perfect cocktail opportunity to incorporate the fresh herb of your choice ? lavender, basil, rosemary or mint ? and could easily serve a crowd as a pitcher drink. It would also make a mighty tasty non-alcoholic summer refresher. Just omit the whisky and you have an herbal, honey-tinted lemonade.

AP Exclusive: Romney uses secretive data-mining

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Building upon its fundraising prowess, Mitt Romney's campaign began a secretive data-mining project this summer to trove through Americans' personal information ? including their purchasing history and church attendance ? to identify new and likely wealthy donors, The Associated Press has learned.

The project employs strategies similar to those the business world uses to influence the way Americans shop and think. Now they're being used to sway presidential elections. The same personal data consumers give away ? often unwittingly when they swipe their credit cards or log into Facebook ? is now being used by the people who might one day occupy the White House.

For Romney's data-mining project, which began as early as June, the Republican candidate quietly turned to a little-known but successful analytics firm that previously performed marketing work for a colleague tied to Bain & Co., the management-consulting firm that Romney once led.

The head of Buxton Co. of Fort Worth, Texas, chief executive Tom Buxton, confirmed to the AP his company's efforts, which help Romney identify potentially wealthy and previously untapped Republican donors across the country. The Romney campaign declined to discuss on the record its work with Buxton or the project's overall success.

There are no records of payments to Buxton from Romney's campaign, the Republican National Committee or a joint fundraising committee. Under federal law, companies cannot use corporate treasury funds or resources, such as proprietary data analysis, for in-kind contributions to federal campaigns.

The effort by Romney appears to be the first example of a political campaign using such extensive data analysis. President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has long been known as data-savvy, but Romney's project appears to take a page from the Fortune 500 business world and dig deeper into available consumer data.

Buxton said he's working for the Romney campaign because he wants "to be on the winning team."

He once worked with a former Romney business partner to provide insights, for example, about where Petco should open a new pet-supply store to maximize profits. In addition to Buxton, the data-mining project was described to the AP by a Romney fundraiser who spoke on condition of anonymity because the fundraiser did not want to face repercussions for describing internal campaign processes.

Businesses use those kinds of analytics firms to answer key questions for clients, such as where to build a retail store or where to mail pamphlets touting a new product. The analysis doesn't directly bring in campaign contributions, but it generates the equivalent of sales leads for Romney's campaign.

The project relies upon a sophisticated analysis by powerful computers of thousands of commercially available, expensive databases that are lawfully bought and sold behind the scenes by corporations, including details about credit accounts, families and children, voter registrations, charitable contributions, property tax records and survey responses. It combines marketing data with what is known in this specialized industry as psychographic data analysis, which tries to ferret out Americans' consumer behavior and habits.

An early test analyzed details of more than 2 million households near San Francisco and elsewhere on the West Coast and identified thousands of people who would be comfortably able and inclined to give Romney at least $2,500 or more.

An AP analysis this week determined that Romney's campaign has made impressive inroads into even traditionally Democratic neighborhoods, collecting more than $350,000 this summer around San Francisco in contributions that averaged $400 each. High-dollar donors have been essential to Romney's election effort, unlike Obama, who relies on more contributors giving smaller amounts.

Romney and the GOP have out-fundraised Obama's re-election effort for the past three months.

The fate of the presidency may depend on who raises more money in the campaign, whose cost for the first time is approaching $2 billion. That figure includes hundreds of millions of dollars spent by super political action committees that accept unlimited and in some cases effectively anonymous contributions from millionaires, companies, labor groups and others to pay for television campaign advertisements across the nation.

Buxton confirmed that the data-mining project began with the help of Dick Boyce, Romney's former Bain & Co. colleague, after Romney joined fundraising forces with the Republican National Committee. Buxton expressed such confidence in his business and analysis methods that, in nearly two decades of running his firm, he told AP he has always been able to answer essential questions for customers.

"I can look at data of any kind and say, 'I want to know who that $100 donor could be,'" Buxton said. "We look at data of any kind."

Obama's campaign employs its own form of data analysis to lure potential supporters, via Facebook and Twitter, to fine-tune messages for supporters and potential donors. The Obama campaign declined to comment on its internal fundraising practices, although Buxton said it doesn't work with Obama's campaign.

Romney's campaign has also been secretive about how it raises its money, and most fundraising events have been closed to the press. Unlike Obama, Romney's campaign has declined to publicly identify the names of major fundraisers, known as bundlers, who have helped amass much of its money. Details of this project have not been made public until now.

Buxton is not listed as a vendor in any of the campaign's finance reports submitted to the Federal Election Commission, although some campaigns do not report expenses until the vendor sends them a bill.

When AP initially asked Buxton about its work for Romney, it declined to acknowledge that it helped raise money for the RNC, even as its own website displayed a prominent log-in page for "2012 presidential donor prospecting." That web address contained the letters "RNC" ? a common abbreviation for the Republican National Committee. After the AP's continued questioning, the company replaced the "RNC" letters in the web address with a generic "campaign" the next day.

This is not Buxton's first foray into politics: In 2006, the company produced 1,000 names for a Connecticut campaign to meet a write-in ballot requirement, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram then reported, and 900 of them signed up.

Few in Washington campaign circles recognized the work of Buxton, although it lists thousands of other clients in the public and private sector, including hospitals and local governments.
