Russian family holed up in T.O. church finally deported to Israel

TORONTO -- Time has finally run out for a Russian family who sought refuge in an east-end church for a year to avoid deportation.

Ilan Brovman, 42, his wife, Irit, 40, and their children, Tom, 8, and Katrin, 5, were arrested outside the West Hill United Church and placed on a flight to Tel Aviv last Friday, their counsel said Monday.

The family had been holed up in a basement apartment of the Scarborough church to avoid being sent back to Israel, where they alleged they faced persecution for having a Jewish surname while not being Jews.

The failed refugee claimants had vowed not to leave the church for fears they would be deported. They were sought on warrants for failing to show up for removal.

"Their time had run out and there was no way they could remain in Canada," said immigration consultant Roy Kellogg, who represented Ilan Brovman. "They are now back in Israel."

He said officers of the Canada Border Services Agency were waiting outside the church for the family to appear.

Irit and the children were arrested early last week and held in detention, Kellogg said, adding it took several days before Ilan Brovman was persuaded to join his family for the trip home.

The family had obtained letters of support from two churches as well as community groups, leaders and politicians.

The Brovmans arrived in Canada from Israel in 2007 and filed failed refugee claims at Pearson airport.

Brovman said his family left Russia in 1992 for Israel, where he alleges they were singled out, insulted or assaulted for having a Jewish surname while not being Jews.

India's Supreme Court approves former Exxon Valdez for demolition

Soon, the infamous Exxon Valdez will be no more. The notorious ship became the source of the largest oil tanker spill in U.S. history when it ran aground in Alaska?s Prince William Sound in 1989. Earlier this year, the vessel, which has since been renamed Oriental Nicety, was sold for scrap metal to Priya Blue Industries Pvt., for $16 million.

But in May, the vessel ran into more trouble as India?s Gujarat Maritime Board denied the ship entry into an Indian ship breaking yard after India?s Supreme Court asked the board for reassurance that pollution would not contaminate the soil; the board found that the vessels needed to be decontaminated of hazardous waste before anchoring down on Indian soil.

Now, Bloomberg reports that India?s Supreme Court has reversed that decision. A two-judge team has ruled that the vessel can enter the ship-breaking yard in Alang, on India?s western coast. The judges said that Priya Blue Industries will be responsible for disposing of toxic materials lingering aboard the ship.

The ship will take five months to be broken down, according to Priya Blue?s company founder Sanjay Mehta.

Gopal Krishna, New Delhi-based activist with ToxicsWatch Alliance, called the verdict ?disappointing.? He told Bloomberg that asbestos and heavy metals aboard the vessel pose an environmental threat.

Stress may cause women's brains to age prematurely

Despite the fact that women live longer than men, their brains seems to age faster. The reason? Possibly a more stressful life.

When people age, some genes become more active while others become less so. In the human brain, these changes can be observed through the "transcriptome" ? a set of RNA molecules that indicate the activity of genes within a population of cells.

When Mehmet Somel, a computational biologist at the University of California, Berkeley, and his colleagues compared the transcriptome of 55 male and female brains of different ages, they were surprised to find that the pattern of gene activation and deactivation that occurs with ageing appeared to progress faster in women than in men. This was particularly apparent in an area of the pre-frontal cortex.

"This was just the opposite of what we'd originally expected," says Somel, who was at the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences in China when he did the research. He says that given the fact that females have a longer lifespan, they had expected to see slower or later ageing-related changes in their brain. "But it fits everyday observations on ageing. Not all organs within an individual age at the same rate," he says.

Somel's team compared the expression of more than 13,000 genes in four brain regions. In one region ? the superior frontal gyrus ? they found 667 genes that were expressed differently in men and women during ageing. Of those, 98 per cent were skewed towards faster ageing in women.

Some of these gene changes have previously been linked to general cognitive decline and degenerative disease.

However, sex differences were not uniform among all women. About half the women showed accelerated age-related changes. The researchers say that this hints towards the cause being environmental rather than simply biological.

Cyndi Shannon Weickert from Neuroscience Research Australia in Sydney, says the initial results are interesting but the connection to stress is speculative. She says it would help to know whether the subjects had other medical conditions at the time of death that might have affected their brain transcriptome. She notes that stress is only one possible cause of these effects. Inflammation, for example, might lead to similar genetic changes.

Next, Somel is planning to test the effects of stress on the brain transcriptome of rodents. He would also like to compare stress and age-related neurodegenerative disease patterns across cultures, where female roles vary. "If the mechanism we hypothesise is correct, any policy that ensures equality in opportunity and empowers women could improve future health."

Greek bank deposits hit six-year low in June: ECB

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - A rush by consumers and firms to pull their money out of Greek banks continued in June, European Central Bank data showed on Thursday, adding to the pressure on the country's troubled banking system as doubts grow about Greece's future in the euro.

Speculation about Greece possibly quitting the euro was intense in May when anti-bailout parties saw a strong showing in elections, but the Greek central bank said the process had reversed after the June 17 election.

The ECB's data for June showed that deposits for the month as a whole continued to decline. Private sector deposits in Greek banks fell almost 5 percent, matching the previous month's sharp decrease.

The total fell to 156.2 billion euros at end-June from 163.1 billion a month earlier and is more than one-third below the peak in December 2009. They are now at their lowest level in more than six years.

Analysts said it was possible that deposits had started to return after the elections, but did not make up for the falls early in the month. However, as long as doubts about the country's future in the currency union continue, people might prefer cash holdings to bank deposits.

"It could be that there were sharp falls in the first weeks of June and then recovery," ABN Amro economist Nick Kounis said.

"But if you think, election or no election, there is quite a significant probability of a Greek euro exit, then arguably the most prudent course of action is deposit withdrawal."

The ECB dealt Greek banks another blow by saying it would cease accepting Greek government bonds starting July 25. The move leaves Greek banks dependent on the national central bank's Emergency Liquidity Assistance (ELA) for funds, as they have been shut out of interbank markets.

ELA funds are more expensive than those available at money markets or the ECB's regular refinancing operations, where banks can get cash at 0.75 percent annual rate.

Analysts saw Greek bank pain continuing as long as the country is teetering on the brink of insolvency.

"The biggest problem that the Greek banks have is the sovereign and they have been holding a lot of sovereign debt," Kounis said.

Greek banks' holdings of government bonds, adjusted for market value, have fallen to 19.5 billion euros in June from 50.2 billion a year ago and hit their lowest level since the beginning of statistics in March 1998.

Portuguese deposits dropped 3.5 percent in June to their lowest level since October 2010. Ireland posted a 2 percent decrease in deposits. In Spain, they fell by less than 1 percent to their lowest level since July 2008.

Italy fared better, with deposits rising almost 2 percent.

Monthly fluctuations in the figures are common, though sharp consecutive drops in countries with stable banking systems are unusual.

The data, which are for all currencies combined, are not seasonally adjusted and differ slightly from national central bank figures. The measure excludes deposits from central government and financial institutions.

TV Handyman Mike Holmes Sells Latest Series to HGTV Canada

TORONTO ? HGTV handyman Mike Holmes has sold his latest reno series, Holmes Makes it Right, to HGTV Canada for a fall season debut.

Toronto-based The Holmes Group is also in talks to sell the reality series about homeowners whose lives are brutally disrupted by unimaginable home reno disasters to HGTV stateside.

HGTV Canada will start airing the first nine episodes of Holmes Makes It Right on October 16, with its sister American channel expected to debut the series at the same time as in Canada after a sales agreement is inked.

Two earlier Holmes-hosted series, Holmes on Homes and Holmes Inspection, are already rating winners for HGTV U.S.

Executives at HGTV in Knoxville, Tennessee were not available for comment at press time.
