Business School Admissions Blog | MBA Admission Blog | Blog ...

Many MBA applicants feel that they are purchasing a brand when they choose a business school to attend, but the educational experience is what is crucial to your future, and no one will affect your education more than your professors. Each Wednesday, we profile a standout professor as identified by students. Today, we focus on?Harry Kraemer?from the Kellogg School of Management at?Northwestern University.

Harry Kraemer, Northwestern KelloggAnother winner of the Lavengood Award for Outstanding Professor of the Year (2008), Harry Kraemer?(?Managerial Leadership?)?is a Kellogg alumnus (MBA ?79) and was CEO and president of Baxter International (a $9B health care firm) before becoming an adjunct professor at Kellogg. Kraemer remains active in the business community as an executive partner at Madison Dearborn, a Chicago-based private equity firm. Students we interviewed described how Kraemer fuses theory and practice, bringing CEOs from some of the biggest companies in the United States to his class, but outsiders need not worry that such a successful individual would be out of touch with the common student?Kraemer is known for offering students one-on-one career guidance, even if they are not enrolled in his class.

For more information about Kellogg and 15 other top-ranked business schools, check out the?mbaMission Insider?s Guides.

London Markets: U.K. stocks recover after Chinese data

By Sara Sjolin, MarketWatch

LONDON (MarketWatch) ? U.K. stocks advanced Wednesday with the FTSE 100 index tracking gains across Europe, after encouraging Chinese manufacturing data set the stage for buying in resource shares.

The FTSE 100 /quotes/zigman/3173262 UK:UKX +0.29% ?rose 0.1% to 5,806.10, as the benchmark recouped a small portion of its 1.4% loss on Tuesday.

Politicizing the yuan

The yuan recently hit a 19-year high amid renewed cries for China to allow its currency to appreciate further. The WSJ's Mark Cranfield explains how politics may be influencing moves on China's currency.

Energy shares also were among notable gainers in London, playing off the ?flash? HSBC China manufacturing Purchasing Managers? Index, which rose to a reading of 49.1 for October, hitting a three-month high. A reading below 50 signals contraction. See: China factory data add to ?soft landing? view.

?Today?s HSBC manufacturing PMI, in line with recent hard data for September, suggests that the Chinese economy is bottoming out and is poised to recover moderately in the coming months as long as global demand does not weaken further,? analysts at Danske Bank said in a note. ?We expect HSBC manufacturing PMI to be above 50 by year-end.?

Against this backdrop, Royal Dutch Shell PLC /quotes/zigman/359955 UK:RDSB +1.04% ? /quotes/zigman/379012/quotes/nls/rds.b RDS.B +1.05% ?added 1%, outpacing BP PLC /quotes/zigman/210014 UK:BP +0.47% ? /quotes/zigman/247026/quotes/nls/bp BP +0.97% ?up 0.2%, and BG Group PLC /quotes/zigman/249967 UK:BG +0.80% up 0.5%.

Mining-sector shares were also on the rise, as most metals prices moved higher. Vedanta Resources PLC /quotes/zigman/336962 UK:VED +1.69% ? added 1.4% and BHP Billiton PLC /quotes/zigman/184879 UK:BLT +0.98% ? /quotes/zigman/270355/quotes/nls/bhp BHP +1.23% ? /quotes/zigman/180893 AU:BHP -1.38% ?rose 0.7%.

Curbing equity gains in the U.K. and across Europe, October purchasing-managers-index readings for the euro zone proved weaker than expected, as did and the closely watched German Ifo business-climate index. The PMI reading for the euro zone dropped to a 40-month low of 45.8 from 46.1 in September. See related: Euro extends slide on weak PMI, German Ifo data

In the U.S., the preliminary PMI reading for October showed an improvement to 51.3 from a three-year low of 51.1 in September. See: October U.S. Markit manufacturing index inches up

Banks traded mixed, with Barclays PLC /quotes/zigman/152323/quotes/nls/bcs BCS -1.28% ?shedding 1.1% and Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC /quotes/zigman/10330253 UK:RBS +0.72% ? /quotes/zigman/530544/quotes/nls/rbs RBS +1.09% ?gaining 0.7%, while sector heavyweight HSBC Holdings PLC /quotes/zigman/13843 UK:HSBA -0.28% ? /quotes/zigman/207333/quotes/nls/hbc HBC +0.84% ? /quotes/zigman/13834 HK:5 -0.85% ?rose 0.6%.

Among other notable movers in London, shares of Reckitt Benckiser Group PLC /quotes/zigman/482114 UK:RB +3.41% ?rose 3.4%. The consumer-goods company said it?s on track to meet 2012 financial targets, underpinned by strength in emerging markets and improved performance in Europe.

ARM Holdings PLC /quotes/zigman/254777 UK:ARM +6.02% ?jumped 6.2% to ?6.79 a share as Barclays reiterated its overweight rating and raised the price target to ?7.50 from ?7.25.

Also Wednesday, WPP PLC /quotes/zigman/526756 UK:WPP -1.22% ?fell 1.1% after UBS cut its rating on the advertising firm to neutral from buy.

Fungus Further Implicates Pharmacy

Health officials today confirmed that fungus found in sealed vials of injectable steroids is the same fungus contributing to an outbreak of meningitis that has killed 20 people.

The laboratory confirmation further implicates the New England Compounding Center, a compounding pharmacy in Framingham, Mass., in the ongoing outbreak that has sickened 257 people in 16 states.

For a map of cases by state, click here.

It's unclear how the fungus, called Exserohilum rostratum, landed in the sealed vials. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed 26 cases of Exserohilum meningitis, as well as one case each of aspergillus and cladosporium meningitis.

The New England Compounding Center has recalled all its products and shut down operations. Calls to the owners were not immediately returned.

Meningitis Outbreak Spreads, Full Recall Announced Watch Video

As many as 14,000 patients are thought to have received injections of the tainted steroid, called methylprednisolone acetate, which is commonly used to treat back and joint pain.

Seventy-six clinics in 23 states that received methylprednisolone acetate from the recalled lots have been instructed to notify all affected patients. The "potentially contaminated injections were given starting May 21, 2012," according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

For a full list of clinics receiving the recalled lots of spinal steroid injections, click here.

Meningitis affects the membranous lining of the brain and spinal cord. Early symptoms of fungal meningitis -- including headache, fever, dizziness, nausea, sensitivity to light, stiff neck, weakness or numbness, slurred speech and pain, and redness or swelling at the injection site -- can take more than a month to appear.

The longest duration from the time of injection to the onset of symptoms in the current outbreak is 42 days, according to the CDC's Dr. Benjamin Park.

"But we want to emphasize that we don't know what the longest will be," he added, stressing that patients who received injections of the recalled drug should stay attuned to the subtle symptoms "for months."

Fungal meningitis is diagnosed through a spinal tap, which draws cerebrospinal fluid from the spine that can be inspected for signs of the disease. Once detected, it can be treated with high doses of intravenous antifungal medications.

Unlike bacterial meningitis, fungal meningitis is not transmitted from person to person and only people who received the steroid injections are thought to be at risk.

No Twitter record, #bindersfullofwomen: Tuesday's debate in social

The first presidential debate set a new record for Twitter traffic around a U.S. political event--so expectations were high that Tuesday's town hall debate might set a new mark. But at the end of the debate, the official tally from Twitter was a mere 7.3 million tweets--around 3 million shy of the record--sent over the course of the evening. The moment that saw the most discussion was the exchange between the candidates over immigration.

Our folks at The Signal took a look at the number of mentions each candidate received. Former Gov. Mitt Romney had the most mentions, but President Barack Obama surpassed the number of mentions he garnered at the first debate, while Romney declined slightly:

Romney's comment about "binders full of women" during his discussion about attempting to secure gender equality in his cabinet while governor of Massachusetts was an immediate hit with the internet crowd--it was trending on Twitter in the United States shortly after he made the remark. Why settle for a binder full of women, BuzzFeed's Executive Editor Doree Shafir quipped, when you could have a Trapper Keeper? Or, added Elizabeth Spiridakis, a retro FiloFax?

As for Romney's advisors take on the moment: According to Grace Wyler of Business Insider, even Eric Fehrnstrom had trouble suppressing a laugh when discussing it after the debate in the spin room:

The binder soon had a Tumblr and a Facebook page devoted to it. Within an hour after the debate's end, the Facebook page had over 90,000 likes. Thanks to Romney's choice phrasing, Patrick Swayze (ok, 1980s Swayze) was given an opportunity to weigh in on the 2012 fight for the White House:
