Gov. Brown signs Lieu bill extending communiy college jobs program

Gov. Jerry Brown on Tuesday signed into law a bill by state Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Redondo Beach, that will extend by five years the fast approaching sunset date for a community college program meant to train students for specific jobs.

Senate Bill 1402 extends the so-called Economic and Workforce Development Program, which trains community college students for jobs in sectors such as transportation, biotechnology, environmental technologies and health care.

The program was set to expire in January of 2013, but Lieu's bill extends it through 2017. It also designates about $23 million to the program for this current school year.

"In an era of limited resources, it is imperative that California use a coordinated approach to workforce and economic development," Lieu said in a statement. "Training students for good-paying jobs in relevant and competitive sectors is the pathway to a strong and stable California economy."
