Helena girl sells lemonade in support of cancer research

HELENA, AL (WBRC)- What do cancer research and lemonade have to do with planning a birthday party? This Saturday, they will be the themes of the birthday celebration for one young Helena resident.

The day after her eighth birthday, Ella Robinett is planning to run a lemonade stand to raise money for cancer research. Instead of birthday gifts this year, Ella is asking friends and family to donate to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization that supports childhood cancer research.

Ella's mom Shelly said her daughter had wanted to do a lemonade stand for awhile and got excited about the idea of doing one for a special cause. Ella's stand is also being held in honor of her grandpa who is being treated for lung cancer. Shelly says Ella's grandpa just finished his last round of chemo and at 81 is still "holding strong."

Many of Ella's friends and family members will be helping out with the lemonade stand on Saturday. Ella has already been selling pre-ordered gallons of lemonade from
Toomer's Drugs store in Auburn and most of those gallons have been
delivered. Shelly says they will also sell cups of cold
lemonade and cookies at the stand tomorrow.

"It will be a fun time and hopefully a little festive," Ella's mom said.

The lemonade stand will be open from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the Silver Lakes subdivision playground on Silver Lakes Drive. Each cup of lemonade will be priced at $2, but Shelly says they are will be happy to receive whatever amount people would like to donate.

Alex's Lemonade Stand is a foundation that began when a four-year-old cancer patient named Alex Scott held a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for cancer. Alex died in 2004 at age eight but her foundation continues her legacy and has raised more than $55 million for cancer research. Find out more from www.alexslemonade.org.
